OK: We would love to learn a bit about the faces behind PLAY Estate Winery from the owners, winemaker and staff! Can you fill us in and give us a feel for the people who make PLAY Estate Winery?

Play is built on passion.  Whether it is Chef’s Burns passion for creating unique tapenades, wine jelly’s or homemade mustard or our owners exploring the science of scent with Summerland research center, the team at Play loves what they do and learns from each othe

OK: The name PLAY is so unique what is the story behind the name?

With a steeped tradition in the Theatre business, Stage West has produced over a thousand of plays and is proud to hold the Guinness Book of World Record’s title as the most “Prolific Play Producer” in the world.  We firmly believe that when work becomes a passion, imagination and creativity creates a place of playful exploration.  In the world of wine and food, we do not work.  We PLAY!!

OK: Your location is in beautiful Penticton overlooking Skaha lake - can you give us a visual description of how absolutely stunning this location is for those who have not ventured your way yet and fill us in on the vibe of the winery? We are huge fans of the decor and design of PLAY.

In this spirit we bring our inspirations to work.  From our theatre bills on the walls to the fire place barrels or picnic tables, in a house of arts, creativity is part of the everyday at Play Estate Winery.  Our unique collection of top hats shaped lights on our tasting bar and old silent films help us pay tribute to the theatre community. While breath taking lake views, the natural settings with fresh quality ingredients create a farm to table, inspired that BC winery.

OK: Please share with us a bit about your vineyard and the wine varietals you offer!

Play features a 14 acre vineyard consisting of wine varietals such as Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat, and Viognier. We produce six spotlight wines including, Ad Lib, Viognier, Moscato, Improv, Syrah, and Applause. Please see below for the complete information about the current wines we have available:

2015 Ad Lib

Dig the bright light balanced acidity of this white Bordeaux style blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. It’s mellow mellon notes jive with a bright lemon crush from the high hats. Experienced and smooth, this old France inspired wine is so light, so fresh, and so clean.

75% Sauvignon Blanc, 25% Semillon

2016 Moscato

Light in sweetness, with a touch “strange fruit,” this low in alcohol wine, will keep you singing and swinging from busy winter holidays to moonlit summer evenings. Modern harmonies of fresh lime and sweet peaches finish lightly, leaving the audience refreshed performance after performance.

100% Muscat

2016 Viognier

This wine has hints of peaches, with highlight rhythms of whipped cream. The high notes of apricot, have been smoothed by five months of French oak. The end result is a soft delicate wine that brushes with the bass of hazelnut, while tipping its hat to summer blossoms.

100% Viognier

2015 Improv

This wine sets aside the old standards of a Bordeaux blend, opting instead for an exclusive session of the best available players. Inspired by the moment, Merlot bass notes and the studied consistency of fourteen months of Oak are influenced by others to sound out a harmony of cherry and fine tobacco. Every year the band produces a fresh version of this wine creating combos inspired by the vibes of that year’s vines.

55% Merlot, 20% Syrah, 17% Cabernet Franc, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon

2015 Syrah

This cool climate Syrah pays attention to tone and atmosphere. Unlike her famous southern sisters this elegant red is a lighter wine on her way to summer stardom. Her subtle complexities of white pepper and spice highlight her talents. The way she showcases the Summerland Cherry makes her is a hit at outdoor venues where her easy lightness shines. 100% Syrah

2015 Applause

This bold wine with breakbeats of berries, heavy bass lines of dark chocolate and high notes of tobacco is sure to get a standing ovation. An experienced trio of Cab Sav, Merlot and Cab Franc deliver on the structure, colour and taste of a classic bordeaux style blend. This wine is a reminder of why we still listen to the greats even if we have heard the song before.

55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc, 20% Merlot

**2013 Red Carpet

This wine is only offered in Magnum bottles and is our premium wine. Cognac soaked cherries, earthy tomato leaf, figs and nutmeg on the nose of this stunning full bodied blend of Cabernet Franc and Syrah. Mouthwatering acidity and fine tannins unfold palate notes of dried berries, cinnamon, milk chocolate and toasted nuts with an ongoing finish.

OK: Can you share with us a bit about the new menu you are introducing upon re-opening and where the chefs inspiration behind it came from?

For this season, our team wanted to provide a more casual, sharing style approach to our menu. We also wanted to start pushing the boundaries with new flavors and techniques to highlight the amazing bounty of seasonal ingredients this province has to offer. We have also given the menu a face lift, it encourages the sharing of our dishes between friends and family. We have totally revamped our dessert program here at the winery as well, as we have moved towards smaller portions, (2-3 bites) at a lower price point, that gives the guest the option of trying multiple different desserts in the form of our trio platter. Our culinary team plans to have constantly changing features throughout the season as well, which will provide different options every time you join us in the bistro.

OK: What is the chefs personal favourite off of the new menu and what wine would he pair it with?

As for a personal favorite, I am partial to the classic's that have been on the menu since day one. Our caper crusted halibut with snap pea risotto and sun-dried tomato beurre blanc pairs elegantly with our Viognier, while our holy trinity burger pairs well with our improv red blend. Shifting focus to the new dishes on our menu, we have a few great vegan options, including a great vegan cheesecake, and we also have some great small plates utilizing local seafood from the west coast, such as mussels, albacore tuna, and prawns.

OK: Tell us a bit about the Opening Act and Front Row Wine Club perks!

Our wine club is a great opportunity to get exclusive access to new releases and library wines. Along with access to our wines, wine club members get discounts in our wine shop and bistro, and access to winery events. Our most popular event is our annual anniversary party, this year it will be hosted on June 9, 2018 more information coming soon. We offer wine shipments twice a year and with our different tiers there is an option for everyone. You can sign up online or come into our wine shop and sign up on site.

OK: What are some of Penticton's "must see and do" activities you would personally recommend for the tourist who has never explored the area before?

Some of Penticton’s “must see and do” include floating down the Penticton River Channel and finish the day on Shaka Beach. It is an opportunity for the whole family to enjoy some time quality time and remember to pack a picnic to enjoy as you float.

OK: Is there anything else you would like to share with us?

Sharing is what we do. Over a great meal or a glass of fine wine, it is the tradition of hospitality and entertainment that makes every time a great time to PLAY.  So please come Eat, Taste, and Play at this fantastic family facility PLAY Estate Bistro and Winery.
